Dr. Pedro T Ramirez is highly recognized for his interest and expertise in the area of radical laparoscopic surgery for women with gynecologic malignancies.  He currently performs very specialized procedures in minimally invasive surgery such as a total laparoscopic radical hysterectomy and laparoscopic extraperitoneal lymph node dissection in patients with early and locally advanced cervical cancer, respectively.  He is the principal investigator in several laparoscopic protocols.  Dr. Ramirez is also one of the country's leading surgeons in robotic surgery for women with gynecologic malignancies.  He has performed numerable robotic radical hysterectomies, radical parametrectomies, and staging procedures.  He is also interested in the development of novel approaches for the treatment of young women with gynecologic malignancies who wish to preserve their fertility. He is one of a select group of surgeons in this country who perform abdominal radical trachelectomy for women with early cervical cancer who wish to preserve future fertility.  He also performed the first simple trachelectomy in a pregnant patient with cervical cancer at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Ramirez is also the principal investigator in several research protocols to develop new therapeutic approaches for patients with advanced ovarian cancer.  He is an active collaborator in several projects evaluating novel surgical techniques such as lymphatic mapping in gynecologic malignancies and modifications of reconstructive surgery after radical pelvic surgery.  He is also involved in evaluating indications, improvements, and complications of surgical procedures performed by gynecologic oncologists.  He remains an active speaker, both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Ramirez has authored and co-authored over 50 research articles in various topics in gynecologic oncology.  He has published 13 book chapters.  He is currently a Junior Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a candidate member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, a Full Member of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society, an Associate Member of the American Association of Cancer Research, and an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He is the Chair of the Gynecologic Oncology Committee for The American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.  He serves as Vice-President of the Houston Gynecologic and Obstetrical Society, and is a member of the Harris County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, and Houston Academy of Science.  He is also a committee member of the Gynecologic Oncology Committee in the Gynecologic Oncology Group.  He sits on the Editorial Board for The Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.  In addition, he serves as Reviewer for Gynecologic Oncology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, International Journal of Gynecologic Cancer, European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, Journal of Surgical Oncology, World Journal of Surgical Oncology, Journal of Clinical Anatomy, and the The Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.
